Why gold and silver?

Why gold and silver?

With a huge amount of economic uncertainty as I write this (Greece narrowly electing a pro-bailout government), it’s a tough choice as to where to put my savings.

One of the reasons that drove me to gold (and to a certain extent silver) is that it’s a great store of value, lots of countries don’ t have capital gains tax or sales tax on it, and it’s really really pretty.

You only live once, and sometimes you just have to splurge.  Rather than getting a sports car that would instantly depreciate and be extremely illiquid in emergencies, gold and silver (both numismatic and bullion) scratches both itches; conservation of wealth and the love of shiny things!

So welcome to my little adventures in gold and silver collecting.  As you’ll no doubt find, I simply prefer coins that appeal to my eyes.

Pictured here is a 5 oz gold proof from Liberia featuring a Sherman tank from World War II.  I still haven’t figured out why this was released, but it is a nice weight and had a super low premium!
